Yes, Animals can Talk

… and I don’t mean cartoon animals! I found this great Fresh Air interview with Irene Pepperberg, all about her pet parrot Alex. Alex could talk, count, recognize shapes, materials, colors, even absences

Here’s Alex at work:

One of the main educational models Pepperberg describes is the “Mock Rival” method, where two researchers play off each other to Continue Reading »

Japanese Buildings & Scenery

I’m collecting photos of Japanese people and architecture and so on, to help my manga students at Henniker Community School can add historical details to their manga projects…

Autumn Spins

I really AM still posting to this blog….

It’s been a busy season, lots of manga and comics energy, and somehow my blogging has fallen by the wayside… Denise has had a wild outburst of Facebook activity, and she’s convinced me to start my own FaceBook account(!), so I created a network page for Mimi’s Doughnuts. Join up, if you like! I’m very interested to see how we can use it.

RoboTeachers?!?

Thanks to the Concord Monitor for this reminder of why I love teaching comics! I’m so grateful for each opportunity to work creatively with all these great teachers and students, exploring this amazing medium.

We’re in the middle of the big Fall Comics Workshop Manga residency here in Henniker, and it’s great to see the entire sixth grade turning on to the awesome characters, stories, and artwork of a distant land. (Stay tuned for student artwork soon.) I’ve been enjoying learning more about the Japanese artforms that laid the groundwork for manga, such as Ukiyo-E and Kimibashai. This is fascinating stuff!

Comics: Education & Organization (Notes!)

Well, as a follow-up to last Sunday’s workshop at the Boston Zine Fair, here is a simple text version of the main points:

  • comics-education-organization.rtf
  • I’ve stripped out all the comics samples, illustrative graphics, and many intermediary slides. They included:

A lot of the presentation also relied on anecdotal ellaboration, ad-lib gesticulation, and the eloquence of a well-placed nose-blow or coughing fit (yes, the cold still being on me that day), so let’s think of this file as a sort of a pale skeleton of the full experience… I hope it’s useful to you, O you tireless comics organizers and promoters!

    Recovering…

Once I get over this cold, and once I write a few grants, and once I post my notes from Sunday’s Boston Zine Fair workshop… then, then, THEN I will wrap up Mimi’s Doughnuts Zine #16 and send it your way, dear reader!
